The sense of hearing is strongly developed in the womb and babies are born able to recognize their parents' voice. What types of music are most beneficial to the developing child?  Current research indicates visible benefits to babies who listen to music pre-natally.  In addition, a stronger bond forms between parent and child.  More About Suzuki Baby Music

Babies, toddlers and ultimately society benefit when early music opportunities are provided. Early music stimulation has been shown to benefit infants pre-natally and within the first months of life.

During the first three years, an infant's brain is, in effect, not completely developed.  The completed 'wiring pattern' is determined by the stimulus that it receives during that time.  Babies who are held, talked to, sung to and exposed to music and stories form stronger neural connections in their brains.  They are therefore more able to handle higher-level thinking skills later in life.  There is a large impact on vocabulary as well since hearing stories and songs teaches words on a variety of subjects.

Dr. Suzuki said "…inspiration and interest are acquired involuntarily by an infant from everything he sees and hears, like a seed that is planted…"  He compared human learning to making a plaster cast:  "At first, it is wet and gooey.  The plaster soon hardens.  After the hardened form is made, nothing can be changed about it.  The heart and talents of a person are the same."

In Suzuki Music Classes for Parent and Baby, the curriculum was specially developed for the needs of the developing child in mind.  Action songs, lullabies and rhymes are interspersed with instruments the children can handle and activities orchestrated for mom and baby to bond while enjoying the myriad aspects of music. This stimulation has been successfully piloted at the Children's Talent Education Center in Canada where for the past 12 years children ages newborn thru three have increased their vocabularies, achieved perfect pitch and, most important of all, grown closer to their parents in a nurturing environment.
